Occasionally, I find myself in the United States for various reasons, and I almost always buy makeup. I can’t help it – there’s so much that we miss out on here in Canada, especially dark foundation shades and products geared towards Black women. So when I went to Philadelphia to visit my family last week, I made sure to hit up an Ulta and a Rite Aid in between stuffing my face with cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and water ices.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Bronzed Amber // Is this an Ulta exclusive? I’ve never seen this in store in Canada, or on the Sephora or The Bay website. In any case, I love Becca highlighters (duh) and Topaz is one of my favourites. Bronzed Amber is supposed to be a mixture of Topaz, Opal, and Wild Honey blush. It’s not as intense as Topaz or Opal (the blush shade probably tones it down) which I just interpret as license to pack it on.
Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Ballerina // I, like the rest of the world, love Laura Geller Gilded Honey. The formula is gorgeous, so I picked up the shade Ballerina, which is a slightly darker, more subdued, cooler gold.
Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer in Deep // This is a repurchase. I first fell in love with this the last time I was in Philly, in September. That one is almost done because I barely use any other concealer, so I got a backup.
Buddy Scrub Raw Cacao // I’ve never heard of this brand, but the simple and cheeky packaging caught my eye. Apparently it’s natural and vegan and all that jazz. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out.
Black Radiance Artisan Color Baked Blush in Toasted Almond // When I walked into Rite Aid and saw Black Radiance, Black Opal, and CoverGirl Queen Collection, I lost my shit. We don’t have any of those brands in the Great White North
but like at least we have universal healthcare?. Black Radiance blush in Toasted Almond looks similar to MAC Taraji Glow, but perhaps slightly more terracotta. I’m excited to try it out!
Black Radiance Pressed Powder in Ebony // It’s rare that powder shades run darker and cooler than my skintone (they’re usually too light and/or orange), so I picked this one up to use as a contour.
CoverGirl Queen Collection Lasting Matte Shine Control Powder in Golden Medium // Speaking of shades darker than my skin, when have I EVER worn the shade “Golden Medium” in anything?! There are actually one or two shades darker than this mattifying powder, which is great – makes me wish we had that kind of inclusivity here at home. In any case, I hope this powder really does deliver the shine control it promises – I’m greasy af these days (do people still use “af” as an intensifier?).
CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer in Ebony Bronze // This is yet another backup – it’s one of my favourite bronzers. They switched up the packaging, too. Me like.
Kiss Trio Lashes // I think I saw Leighannsays use these a few years ago. Sometimes I want to use individual lashes, but they tend to go all wonky on me after some time because I’m not terribly skilled at applying them. I’m hoping that the added stability of these trios – little clusters of three individual lashes – will make them more wearable than individuals.
I didn’t go too crazy, but I’m happy with what I picked up. I’ll keep you posted on how it all works out!
