The One That Had All The Potential

Sephora Cream Lip Stain Full Face
Do you ever come across a product so pretty, so promising that you just hope with every fibre of your being that it will be good?

Maybe that’s a tad dramatic.

Sephora Cream Lip Stain Product

The Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red has been seriously hyped up, particularly by British beauty bloggers, and understandably so. A matte red liquid lipstick at an affordable price? Heck yes.

The name itself is particularly deceiving – it is by no means a stain. Liquid lipstick would be a better descriptor. It is a liquid, pigmented lipstick that dries down to a matte finish.

The colour is absolutely beautiful, and the price point – $16 – is very reasonable. That’s about where the praise ends, though.

The doe-foot applicator is slightly too squishy. This means it holds onto a little too much product, which makes it remarkably difficult to get a clean line around the edge of the lip; instead, I end up with a really weird line gloopy line of product that requires cleaning up.

It feels comfortable on, but it has a bizarre underlying tackiness that causes it to adhere to itself. I have a bad habit of mushing my lips together, and let me tell you, this does not withstand that. The top transfers to the bottom, and my very brown upper lip peeks through. I look like a crazy person. Observe:

I wore this to a party, and my boyfriend asked me, “Why’s your lip grey?” It was a mildly catastrophic.

For this reason, I’ll likely be returning this product. The finish is lovely, but as soon as I do my lip-mushing thing, I look really weird. Comparable to this, but 1000 times better, are the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets. If you’re looking for a matte red liquid lipstick, look in that line – they’re slightly more expensive (in Canada), but they’re available on feelunique.com for about what you pay for this sticky-transfery-mess.

  • I do that lip-mushing thing too. I’ve been wanting to get that Sephora Lip Stain, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets and NYX

    • Matte Lip Creams. I think I’m gonna go with your recommendation and try the Bourjois ones. Thanks for this great post! Xx

      • Glad I could help! The Bourjois ones are really lovely, and a great alternative.

  • It looks really amazing! It sucks that it doesn’t live up to its potential!

  • Augh! That’s too bad! I just watched Essiebutton’s Sephora haul video where she says her friend stuck this in her basket while telling her she “needs this.” I immediately pulled up my Sephora app and added it to my loves. Now I’m rethinking it. Thanks for sharing!

    • I initially heard about this from Amelia’s channel I think. I love Estee. The product is worth a try if you don’t squish your lips together throughout the day/night when you’re wearing it, but keep your Sephora receipt handy for a clean return!

      • Ok :0) I’m a lip squisher…. Can you tell me how to find Amelia’s blog? (Yes, I must be out of the loop, lol).

  • I’m a lip musher too! Glad I’m not the only one. I’d heard such good stuff about this as well and a red lip is like my favourite thing! I’ve heard Lime Crime do a great one, more expensive but even Dita Von Teese tweeted about it so if she approves then it must be great! haha.

    • Ooh, I’ve never tried any Lime Crime. But I trust Dita for red lips, for sure!

      • Me either so don’t quote me on it. But in Dita we trust! I believe its the Lime Crime Velvetines in ‘Red Velvet’. $20 it says on the website.
