Maybe that’s a tad dramatic.
The Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red has been seriously hyped up, particularly by British beauty bloggers, and understandably so. A matte red liquid lipstick at an affordable price? Heck yes.
The name itself is particularly deceiving – it is by no means a stain. Liquid lipstick would be a better descriptor. It is a liquid, pigmented lipstick that dries down to a matte finish.
The colour is absolutely beautiful, and the price point – $16 – is very reasonable. That’s about where the praise ends, though.
The doe-foot applicator is slightly too squishy. This means it holds onto a little too much product, which makes it remarkably difficult to get a clean line around the edge of the lip; instead, I end up with a really weird line gloopy line of product that requires cleaning up.
It feels comfortable on, but it has a bizarre underlying tackiness that causes it to adhere to itself. I have a bad habit of mushing my lips together, and let me tell you, this does not withstand that. The top transfers to the bottom, and my very brown upper lip peeks through. I look like a crazy person. Observe:
I wore this to a party, and my boyfriend asked me, “Why’s your lip grey?” It was a mildly catastrophic.
For this reason, I’ll likely be returning this product. The finish is lovely, but as soon as I do my lip-mushing thing, I look really weird. Comparable to this, but 1000 times better, are the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets. If you’re looking for a matte red liquid lipstick, look in that line – they’re slightly more expensive (in Canada), but they’re available on feelunique.com for about what you pay for this sticky-transfery-mess.
