To me, the cringiest beauty myth is that oily skin does not need moisturizer. All skin needs to be moisturized and cared for; the trick is finding a moisturizer with an appropriate texture for your skin type.
In the spring and summer especially, I tend to reach for gel and jelly consistencies. They’re lightweight, absorb well, and don’t leave my skin greasy. As a result, they sit beautifully under makeup, too. Now, these consistencies can be a bit light for me in the wintertime, but as we head into spring (hopefully), I’ve been a little oilier than I was in, say, January.
The two moisturizers I’ve been reaching for daily are on opposite ends of the price spectrum, oddly enough. The L’Oreal Hydra Genius line carries a handful of moisturizers for different skin types. Of course, I picked up the one for oily skin, and at my local WalMart, it cost me $19.99. This stuff is a lightweight, liquidy gel that absorbs quickly but hydrates well. My skin does not feel dry or tight afterwards, as it sometimes does with other ultra-light moisturizers.
My one complaint about this product is the smell. It has a strong manly, cologne-y smell. I don’t understand why fragrance is necessary at all in skincare products. Fortunately I don’t find it irritating on my skin, but if you have very sensitive skin, maybe give this one a pass.
In contrast, the GlamGlow Volcasmic Matte Glow Moisturizer is a little bit heavier. It still absorbs well, but instead of a gel texture, it’s more of a thick and silicone-y paste. I’m not making it sound good, am I? But trust me, it is. I wasn’t sure exactly what a “matte glow” was when I bought this pricey item, but this delivers it. My skin looks fresh and radiant without being greasy. What’s better, it primes the skin and moisturizes all in one step. It’s fragranced too, but more pleasant and mild in my books, because smells like orange creamsicles. Yes please.
