Maybelline Dream Cushion Fresh Face Liquid Foundation – Review on Dark Skin

I like when Asian skincare trends come to North America because, generally speaking, brands extend the shade range available to include dark-skinned folks of colour like me. Such is the case with Maybelline’s Dream Cushion Fresh Face Liquid Foundation.

The concept is relatively simple: a thin fluid foundation that delivers light (and lightweight!) coverage. These kinds of formulas usually offer a glowy finish, but this one fares surprisingly well on oily skin.

One major drawback is, of course, shade-range related. I wear 60 Cocoa, which is the darkest shade, and I am not the darkest skin tone Mother Nature (or North America) has to offer. Another oddity is the presumed absence of sunscreen: SPF isn’t advertised on the packaging, but the ingredient list has titanium dioxide and iron oxides – two ingredients that usually give makeup its sun-protecting properties – as ingredients the product “may contain.” So idk you guys, I usually put on a sunscreen underneath this just to be safe.

Left, bare-faced; right, Maybelline Dream Cushion only.

When it comes to application, I’ve ditched the little spongy thing the compact comes with and just use a brush. As you can see, it gives some pretty decent coverage with the skin still peeking through, which I like. If you’re accustomed to full coverage matte foundations, of course, you probably won’t enjoy this as much as I did. If you’re in the market for something lightweight and portable for summer, though, this is my pick.
