When I first saw photos of the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, I, like many other people, was immediately reminded of TooFaced’s cheekily-named and overly-hyped mascara, Better Than Sex. The packaging, the brush – all of it is giving me TF vibes. Except the performance of the mascara itself.
Let me explain.
I have very stubborn lashes – they’re hard to curl, and they don’t like to stay curled once they are. They’re also thin and short and just generally sad. I always use a layer of waterproof mascara then curl a second time, but even then, a lot of mascaras are heavy and make my lashes droop.
The Lash Paradise Mascara gives my lashes a pretty, feathery effect: lots of length and a little bit of volume. It does all this without making them uncurl as much as other mascaras do, even by the end of the day.
The hourglass brush and pink packaging are, indeed, very similar to the Too Faced Better Than Sex. However, the formula is a little dryer and the stopper inside scrapes more off the brush than the TF one does, both of which I like. Less product on the brush leads to less product on lashes, which works out better for me. Although I liked Better Than Sex at first, it tends to load the lashes with too much product. That’s great for thickening, but less great for lash droop.
The one drawback is that there is some smudging and transfer. I wore this on a super hot day here in Ottawa – 38 degrees with the humidex – and I had a slight panda-eyes situation going on by the end of the day. On cooler days, though, I haven’t had that issue. A waterproof version could resolve that.
The verdict? I like L’Oreal’s version better than Too Faced’s, and it’s a fraction of the price ($12 here in Canada rather than $30). Save your money and give the drugstore option a try, especially given that mascara should be replaced every three months or so.
