It may not officially be summer yet, but don’t tell that to my face.
I’m already battling the oil. My skin is technically combination because, no matter what I do, around my nose and mouth is Sahara-level dry. In the summer, though, the rest of my face, which is usually moderately oily, goes into overdrive and reaches well-greased-baking-pan levels. Because of this, I have a well-curated arsenal of oil control products. Today, I’m showing you the new kids on the block.
Even with these products, I never go for a completely matte complexion. Healthy skin is naturally a little luminous and I like the natural look. Plus, I think it’s exceptionally difficult for naturally oily people to remain 100% matte all day long. If you’re going for a completely matte look, these products won’t do it ¬– either keep looking or adjust your expectations. If you want luminous skin without looking greasy, stay tuned.
prep// The key to great makeup is in the prep, and a light moisturizer is step one. If you’re using a too-heavy moisturizer (which I did recently because I was looking for one with built-in SPF), you’ll end up on the highway to Greaseville. The Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream* is awesome for oily skin. If anything, it’s a little on the too-light side for me (I have to use a little extra around my mouth and nose). It’s lightweight but still hydrates oily areas nicely.
prime// Primer, man. Where would I be without it. Last summer I was loving the Becca EverMatte, but recently I’ve been trying out the Makeup For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer. They’re on-par in terms of how they work for me: they help my foundation stick, and they keep me more matte than if I didn’t use a primer. Also, they both come in more affordable mini sizes, which is a plus.
customize// Not all foundations or tinted moisturizers are made for oily skin. The CoverFX Custom Blot Drops are a relatively new find for me, but I love them because I can add that little extra bit of oil control to my foundation (which I mix to customize colour-wise anyway). Thanks to these, I can blot once during the day instead of twice.
touch up// Before I found these, I thought oil blotting sheets were kind of retro. I used them when I was a pre-teen, well before I was allowed to use powder to tone down my shiny face. The Sephora Collection Shine Only From Within blotting kit is an update on blotting sheets. It comes with an adhesive pouf that lets you blot easily and evenly. The little mirror in the compact is handy, too. The only thing I don’t like is that the pouf is small so the sheets are smaller than normal ones, so I need 2 to do my whole face.
These are the new additions! That being said, I’m sure that by the end of the summer I’ll have new(er) products to add to this list.
