Back to School Beauty with Three Drugstore Gems – Swatches on Dark Skin

It’s back to school time for those of us still in school, and the cost of textbooks and other back to school paraphernalia can mean a tight budget for September (or, y’know, always…#studentlife). To give you some budget-friendly makeup inspo, I thought I’d share three drugstore gems that I’ve been loving lately.

Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter in 100 Molten Gold // There’s been a bit of buzz on the internet about this baby, and it’s entirely justified. The quality is absolutely phenomenal, and totally comparable to higher-end highlighters. It’s soft, pigmented, blendable, and gives a gorgeous metallic gold finish.

Of everything in my collection, it’s most comparable to LG Gilded Honey and Becca Opal. I think I got mine at Walmart for around $10CAD, but be mindful of where you buy it, as I’ve seen it for up to $16 at other drugstores, which seems pricey for a drugstore product to me.

Wet n Wild Photofocus Concealer in 845B Dark Cocoa // After picking it up this past winter, I’m finally tan enough to use this concealer. It’s a really good match for around my mouth and chin, which tends to be darker and need some extra lovin’ from the colour corrector and concealer. That area also tends to be drier on me, and I like that this concealer doesn’t cake up.

In texture but not shade, it’s comparable to the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. I just wish that Walmart carried more dark shades, because WnW has an excellent shade range.

Hard Candy Sheer Envy Color Correct Cushion Wonder // It’s not easy to find a good colour corrector at the drugstore, much less so an orange one – brands tend to cover the pastel bases pretty well, but those are not especially useful on dark skin. That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised by this one from Hard Candy. It’s the perfect shade of orange with the right amount of pigmentation – not too dark or so pigmented that it requires caked-on layers of concealer, you know?

In terms of shade, it’s like a slightly deeper version of MAC’s Peach Lustre.
